How long will it be before ISIS jihadists launch a major terrorist operation inside the United States, or capture and publicly behead an American on U.S. soil?

Readers of my latest political thriller, The Third Target, will recall the terrorist attack in Washington, D.C. that unfolds in the novel. But will fiction turn into reality and when?

It could be sooner, God forbid, if ISIS is able to continue recruiting Americans inside the homeland to engage in their evil mission.

“A year after ISIS became a household name in America, using brutality and savvy propaganda to challenge al Qaeda and its affiliates for jihadist adherents, U.S. prosecutions of would-be recruits have exploded,” CNN reported this past week.

“The flurry of arrests — at least 25 people have been detained since January — is a sign that complicated, manpower-intensive investigations begun when ISIS started seizing swaths of territory a year ago are finally being completed,” notes reporter Evan Perez. “But they also highlight the unique challenges that ISIS poses in comparison with al Qaeda, which has attracted fewer U.S.-based recruits.”
